Globe Tripping
Around the world in 18 suites? It’s par for the course at Le Monde Hotel, the latest addition to Edinburgh’s design hotel scene.
Self-proclaimed hotel guru Ian Schrager may have declared the death of the design hotel, but clearly those folk in Edinburgh didn’t receive the memo. Opened this spring, Le Monde Hotel on upmarket George Street is aimed firmly at the design-obsessed traveler. The concept? Each of the boutique hotel’s 18 suites owe their interior design to a different city – so it’s exposed brick walls and a loftlike space in New York, Cuban plantation chic in Havana, and imported Moroccan furnishings in Marrakech. And all of this hidden within the gracious façade of an elegant Georgian building. Kudos for an idea well-executed, though for the price of a two-night stay (upward of £245 per night), you could just as easily hop an EasyJet flight to the city itself. Those on less expansive budgets can enjoy the vibe sans suite in the hotel’s quartet of restaurants and bars: Swill vin blanc in the bordello-esque Parisian salon bar, throw back espresso in the fashion-y Milan café, or trip to Vienna for a midday bite. Look out for other Le Monde openings in Glasgow, Aberdeen, and Manchester. Centers of world style, all.
