DesignTorget protects bananas
In a country known for its directional design savvy, trend boutiques face an uphill battle in keeping a stylish head above the hip hordes. All bar one. Taking up a prime spot in Gothenburg’s chic cool Vallgatan district, DesignTorget devotes 100 percent of its cavernous space to highlighting the best offerings from Sweden’s as-yet unrecognised designers. Keep a watch out for Gabriella Agnér and her post-modern snow globes, Pluto’s nature-lovin’ coat hooks and Inga-Lill Johnsson’s flower-inspired lighting collection. The award for practical panache, however, must go to the genius behind the Banana Guard: a banana-shaped plastic casing designed to protect the easily bruised fruit from backpack mishaps, it’s available in vibrant shades of yellow, red, blue and green. And all this for the everyman price of 90 Swedish Krona (about US$12). This brings us to the final plus point. Thanks to their no-name status, designer wares here can be bought at a fraction of the price of those bearing the moniker of the country’s better-known createurs. Add to this the thrill of discovery and a trip to DesignTorget becomes a priceless experience for the design junkie in us all.
