Luxurious Layings in Lyon
Indulge in over the top elegance in France’s second city.
Sure, we love minimalist elegance as much as the next new millennium traveller. But that’s not to say all those acres of sparingly decorated hotel rooms don’t, at times, induce a dire case of designer boredom. Not a problem you’ll have with these luxe lodgings, situated almost side-by-side in the heart of Vieux Lyon.
Cour des Loges: Four-star lodging in a UNESCO World Heritage listed city will never be found wanting. Take this labyrinthine hotel, a stunning structure combining four superbly preserved Renaissance buildings from the 14th, 16th and 17th centuries. Rooms are decorated in the opulent style the setting (and rates) demand. , The cheapest of the 62 rooms start at €230. Those not in possession of a Centurion Amex can soak up the atmosphere in the hotel café, a delightful tree-shaded spot overlooking one of the city’s many cobble-stoned courtyards. Coffee is €3, though I’d pay out for the complimentary bowl of Haribo alone. Nearby, La Tour Rose’s twelve suites decorated in the rich silks for which Lyon was once famed, pays stunning homage to the three Renaissance buildings within which it is housed. Moliere performed his L’Etourdi in one of the hotels lavishly appointed sitting rooms. Explore the warren of corridors and stumble upon terraced gardens and hidden waterfalls. Or leave the discovery to Columbus-types and settle in at one the hotel’s three stellar restaurants, each boasting its own specialist style. Total extravagance with a price to match. Rooms from €180.
